Rockstar Games operates out of New York City and has been active since December 1998. The company started as a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive using assets from BMG Interactive. While they list themselves as both a publisher and developer, their catalog shows a heavy focus on publishing with 43 titles in that role compared to only 14 developed in-house. Their total footprint on PlayPile includes 47 games spanning from the late 1990s through 2026. Their output grew significantly after their first decade. They released just one game in the 1990s before hitting a stride with 17 titles each in the 2000s and 2010s. The 2020s have seen six releases so far, which suggests a slower pace of new development compared to previous eras. Their portfolio is dominated by Adventure games with 26 entries and Shooters with 25. They also have a strong presence in Racing with 17 titles, while genres like Strategy or Sports appear only once or twice in their list. Platform reach is broad but leans heavily toward PC Microsoft Windows with 25 releases. Consoles make up the rest of their distribution, with PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PlayStation 5 all holding between 9 and 11 titles each. They have also reached mobile audiences with 9 iOS games and 8 Android games. Quality varies across their catalog but leans toward high scores. The average IGDB rating stands at 78.1 out of 100 based on 32 rated titles. Seventeen of these games are considered great with scores over 80, while 13 fall into the good range between 60 and 79. Only two titles received mixed ratings, and none are poor. Top performers include Grand Theft Auto V: Special Edition at 99.3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 at 93.7. Recent history shows some inconsistency in quality control for remasters. Grand Theft Auto III: The Definitive Edition dropped to a mixed 57.1 score, even as the original Red Dead Redemption returned with an 82.4 rating in 2023. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release in November 2026.
