Great Swordsman is a 1984 arcade fighter from Taito that pits one or two players against each other in weapon-based bouts. You use a two-way joystick and three buttons to land strikes with each button corresponding to a different attack strength. The goal is to either hit your opponent or force them off the platform. The game cycles through three distinct styles, swordplay kendo and gladiatorial combat, across 15 total levels. Each mode ends with a bonus round where deflecting incoming arrows nets extra points. Clearing all levels unlocks a tougher difficulty setting that keeps the challenge fresh. The game’s tight controls and punishing mechanics make it stand out. Holding buttons sustains attacks but releasing them resets to idle which adds risk to every strike. Players must time blocks perfectly to intercept opponent’s weapons mid-swing. While it lacks modern polish its straightforward combat and escalating difficulty kept arcades engaged for years. A small but dedicated retro community still debates its legacy as a precursor to later 2D fighters.
