Killzone Liberation shifts the franchise to a third-person shooter with a tactical twist. You control Templar on Vekta as ISA forces fight Helghast occupation. Combat blends real-time action with a paused zoomed-out view showing objectives and enemy positions. Switch between close-quarters gunplay and strategic planning during missions. Multiplayer supports up to six players in modes like Deathmatch and Capture the Flag with Ad Hoc co-op and competitive options. The game stands out for evolving the series formula beyond its PS2 roots. The hybrid combat system offers a fresh approach to squad-based tactics with slower moments for decision making. While metacritic scores hover around 70% from 2006 reviews, its legacy is cemented as a key entry in the series. Available on PS4 and PS5 now through backward compatibility, it brings older-school shooter design to modern hardware.
Two months after the events of Killzone, most of southern Vekta is still under Helghast control. The rules of war are cast aside when the Helghast General, Metrac, employs increasingly brutal measures to seize the initiative and strengthen his position. Reprising the role of Templar, the player is sent on a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac, while ISA troops continue the fight for liberty.
