Killzone: Mercenary is a first-person shooter that lets you play as a mercenary straddling two warring factions. You take on contracts for both Helghast and ISA forces, choosing your approach with customizable weapons and strategies. The PS Vita's touchscreen handles movement and aiming while the rear panel lets you issue commands or switch gear mid-mission. Each job rewards cash based on how efficiently you complete objectives. The game adds a new layer to the Killzone universe by letting players influence events from both sides of the conflict. Its use of Vita hardware feels intuitive, especially during firefights where touch controls keep pace with fast action. Released in 2013 as the series' first handheld sequel, it maintained the franchise's gritty aesthetic while proving the Vita could handle high-stakes shooters. A small but dedicated player base still praises its tactical depth and no-nonsense combat.
Starting just after the ending of the original Killzone, and revisiting many of the events from the Killzone trilogy, the game puts players in the rugged combat boots of a mercenary named Arran Danner. Danner, a former UCA soldier, has no qualms about taking on paid contracts from the ISA, as well as the Helghast.
