About New Super Mario Bros. Wii

New Super Mario Bros. Wii arrived on November 12, 2009 as the tenth main entry in the Super Mario franchise. Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development built this side-scrolling adventure for the Wii, with later support on the Wii U. The story starts when Bowser Jr. steals Princess Peach from her birthday party inside a giant cake. Mario and Luigi team up with Yellow Toad, Blue Toad, or Yoshi to chase down the villain's airship. This title marked a return to local co-op action since the original Mario Bros arcade game. It brings more levels, enemies, and items than its DS predecessor while adding two fresh power-ups that change how you move through every stage.

Gameplay

You control a plumber running left or right across 2D planes while jumping on Goombas and avoiding pits. The core loop involves reaching the flagpole at the end of each level without taking damage. A major shift from previous entries is the ability to play with three other people locally. Up to four characters can jump, throw fireballs, or slide in a penguin suit together. Two new mechanics define the experience: the Propeller Mushroom lets you glide slowly through the air, and the Penguin Suit grants ice skating abilities that make movement slippery. You must coordinate these skills to reach hidden areas. The game modes include standard single-player runs and chaotic multiplayer sessions where players can knock each other into hazards or help them progress.

What Players Think

Critics and players have responded strongly to this title. Metacritic users awarded it an 87 out of 100, while IGDB shows a score of 81.5 based on 334 ratings. The community moods are overwhelmingly positive, with most reviewers praising the multiplayer chaos as a highlight. Average playtime sits around 12 hours for a standard run, but completionists spend significantly longer hunting for every star coin and secret warp zone. Review snippets frequently mention the difficulty curve scaling up nicely in later worlds. Many players note that the co-op mode creates memorable moments of failure and success within minutes. The game maintains high engagement levels years after release because the local multiplayer aspect remains unmatched by modern competitors.

PlayPile's Take

This platformer is a solid purchase for anyone who wants to play with friends on a couch. The price is standard for a classic Nintendo title, and there are no paid DLC expansions to worry about. Players can chase achievements related to speed runs or collecting all power-ups without frustration. It works best for groups who enjoy competitive mayhem as much as cooperative puzzle solving. Single players will find the level design tight and the controls responsive throughout the entire campaign. The co-op mode adds a layer of strategy that changes how you approach every obstacle. You should play it if you want a reliable platformer that delivers consistent fun without modern monetization tactics.

Storyline

Today is Princess Peach’s birthday, so her castle is full of presents. Mario and Luigi are there, and they’re celebrating with the Toads and Princess Peach when a huge birthday cake arrives. Who in the world could it be from? Suddenly, Bowser Jr. and minions jump out of the cake. Everyone is shocked and pandemonium ensues. In a flash, the invaders snatch Princess Peach and fly away in a giant Airship. The Toads are in a panic! Mario and Luigi—and Yellow Toad, Blue Toad and Yoshi too!—pursue the Airship in order to rescue Princess Peach. Together, the four head out on an adventurous journey!
