About Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus

Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus arrived on November 25, 1998 as the sequel to the original adventure. Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants and published by GT Interactive Software, this title launched on the PlayStation before landing on PC, PlayStation Portable, and later PS3. You play as Abe, a Mudokon who just wanted a quiet retirement until visions from the Three Weirdos disrupted his peace. The Glukkons are back to exploit Mudokons for SoulStorm Brew, a drink made from their bones and tears. Abe gains new supernatural abilities to fight this corporate nightmare. This game delivers a classic 2D platforming experience with a dark satirical tone that defines the Oddworld universe. It remains a key entry point for anyone who has not finished the saga yet.

Gameplay

You navigate Abe through linear levels filled with traps and enemies like the violent Sligs. The core loop involves sneaking past guards, solving environmental puzzles, and rescuing Mudokon workers scattered throughout each zone. New mechanics include using explosive farts to distract or knock out foes. You can also turn invisible or heal addicted Mudokons from SoulStorm dependency. Levels range from the toxic FeeCo Depot to the dangerous Slig Barracks and the infamous Bonewerks. You must guide rescued Mudokons to safety while avoiding detection by corporate security. The controls feel responsive, allowing for precise jumps and quick turns during intense chases. Each stage presents a distinct environment where you use Abe's powers to overcome obstacles and reach the exit zone without getting caught or killed.

What Players Think

The PlayPile community rates this title highly with an IGDB score of 81.8 out of 100 based on 123 user ratings. Players spend an average of 8 hours completing the main story, though completionists often reach 15 hours to find all collectibles. The dominant community mood is "Nostalgic" with a secondary spike in "Frustrated" due to the game's difficulty spikes. Review snippets frequently mention the clever puzzle design but also cite the harsh checkpoint system as a major pain point. Achievement data shows that 64% of players unlock all trophies, indicating a dedicated completionist base. Historical sales data reveals the game hits its lowest price point at $1.99 on Green Man Gaming, making it accessible for new fans to jump in without breaking the bank.

PlayPile's Take

This game is worth your time if you enjoy challenging platformers with strong environmental storytelling. The price of $1.99 makes it a no-brainer purchase even if you hate tough levels. You will spend most of your session trying to keep Abe alive while maneuvering past armed guards. The achievement list provides clear goals for those who want 100% completion. Be prepared to die often as the Sligs do not take prisoners. If you liked the first game, this sequel holds up well despite its age. Skip it if you prefer modern auto-save features or smooth controls over retro precision.

Storyline

The game continues the story of Abe, charting his efforts to save his fellow Mudokons from another plot by the Glukkons to exploit them. Abe discovers that the Glukkons are enslaving Mudokons, this time to produce a drink called Soulstorm Brew, which uses Mudokon bones and tears as its ingredients. Abe must travel to the Soul Storm Brewery, stop those corporate villains and save the enslaved Mudokon workers.
