"Coming back to how Oniken plays, it is clearly trying to be a loving homage to 80’s side-scrollers, but it misses the point in how it uses its challenge. Rather than have proper structure and reliance on muscle memory as the games of that era did, Oniken often relies on cheap and nasty death traps that are very much designed to be ‘tough’ instead of challenging. Yes, you can ‘beat’ it and muddle through, but there’s little warmth or enjoyment to it. On the upside, playing it on the Switch’s handheld mode in bursts does alleviate some of the frustration. The only problem there being the Switch already has plenty of 8-bit games of higher quality both old and new to play. So, pretty or not, it’s hard to recommend Oniken to all but the most ardent retro gaming fan."

You play as Zaku a rogue ninja with mysterious motives slicing through hordes of enemies in a war-torn world. The game demands tight platforming quick reflexes and fluid melee attacks as you dodge traps and dismantle bosses. Each level mixes horizontal scrolling with vertical challenges requiring precise jumps and timed strikes. The combat system lets you swap between swords guns and explosives to adapt to wave after wave of opposition. The game’s difficulty curve is steep but fair with consistent 4.5 star ratings from long time action fans. It retains the punishing charm of classic 8 bit brawlers while adding modern polish like smooth animations and responsive controls. With 12 distinct boss fights and procedurally generated enemy placements no two runs feel exactly alike. Available on multiple consoles and PC it’s a compact yet replayable test of skill for fans of old school precision gameplay.
Storyline
When a global war nearly decimated humankind, an evil military organization called Oniken takes advantage of the situation to dominate and oppress the few remaining survivors. Even though any resistance to this organization seemed hopeless, a small rebel movement organizes strikes against Oniken. One day, a ninja mercenary named Zaku offers his services to the resistance for unknown reasons. His moves are lethal and now he is the resistance's only hope.
