About Onimusha 3: Demon Siege

Capcom Production Studio 2 dropped Onimusha 3: Demon Siege on February 26, 2004 for PlayStation 2 and PC. This third entry shifts the series setting to Paris while keeping the core action intact. You play as Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi fighting demons alongside Jacques Blanc, a French officer from the future who got swapped with the samurai. The team built this title on a new 3D engine to create detailed cityscapes instead of traditional Japanese landscapes. Jean Reno voiced Jacques to help sell the game in the West. It remains a single-player adventure where you juggle two characters and their distinct abilities to stop Nobunaga Oda from conquering everything with his Genma army.

Gameplay

You switch between Samanosuke and Jacques to tackle different scenarios throughout the campaign. Each character wields unique weapons that absorb enemy energy to unlock upgrades. The combat feels responsive now that the developers utilized a full 3D environment rather than static backgrounds. You run through Paris streets or dark interiors while managing inventory and solving puzzles that require items from both protagonists. One minute you are slashing demons with a katana, and the next you are using a futuristic gun to trigger switches. The control scheme handles these actions smoothly without feeling clunky. You will spend significant time backtracking with new abilities to access previously blocked areas. This structure forces you to master different playstyles as you alternate between the two heroes.

What Players Think

Critics loved this one, giving it a solid 85 out of 100 on Metacritic. Reviewers specifically praised how much better the controls felt compared to earlier entries and noted the visual improvements from the new engine. The community agrees that the Paris setting adds a fresh flavor to the formula. Sales data shows over 1.5 million copies moved by May 2008, proving people bought it in large numbers. While some players found the item exchange mechanic slightly tedious during puzzles, the general consensus remains positive. The game holds up well today with high ratings from long-time fans who appreciate the polished combat system. It stands as one of the strongest entries in the franchise according to user scores and critical reception.

PlayPile's Take

This is a solid buy if you enjoy action-adventure games with puzzle elements. The price varies by platform, but the single-player campaign offers plenty of hours for the cost. You get a full story without needing multiplayer or online features. The achievement list is decent but not exhaustive for completionists. I would recommend this to anyone who liked the first two Onimusha titles and wants to see where the series went next. The 3D visuals hold up, and the dual-character mechanic adds genuine variety to the fights. Do not skip this one just because the setting changed locations. It is a definitive experience for fans of the genre.

Storyline

The story focuses on the returning hero, swordsman Hidemitsu Samanosuke Akechi, who is in his quest to defeat his nemesis, Nobunaga Oda, who wishes to conquer Japan with his army of demons known as Genma. However, Samanosuke changes places with a French officer from the future named Jacques Blanc, and both have to adapt to their new worlds to get rid of Nobunaga and the Genma.
