Onyanko Town casts you as Milky, a mother cat navigating a dog-ridden city to find her son Michael. You dodge enemies like aggressive dogs, speeding cars, and a suspicious fish merchant while collecting floating fish for brief invincibility. The grid-like city forces you to switch between roads and sidewalks, where different threats lurk. Early levels let fish power-ups save you, but after level 30 the fish merchants take over, making those pickups useless. Timing and memorizing enemy patterns become key as you avoid manholes, pylons, and venom-spitting sewer snakes. The game’s charm lies in its quirky simplicity and musical oddities. Classical track Ballet des poussins loops through the action, adding a surreal rhythm to the chaos. Its focus on younger players contrasts with the edgier NES titles of the era, offering a lighter but still challenging experience. While not a genre-definer, its mix of platforming and survival mechanics with a food-chain twist makes it a curious relic, dogs chase cats, cats chase fish, and everyone chases survival.
