About Payday 2

Overkill Software released Payday 2 in August 2013 through Starbreeze Studios. This tactical shooter launched on PC, PlayStation 3 and 4, Xbox 360 and One, Switch, and Linux. You play as one of four bank robbers: Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf or Chains. The goal is simple yet brutal. Your crew hits high-value targets in Washington D.C. while police forces try to stop you. The game blends third-person shooting with RPG progression systems where you earn skills to customize your character. It runs on a solid co-op framework that demands coordination between four players to succeed against overwhelming odds.

Gameplay

You control one of the crew members during heists that require precise teamwork. Your team must crack safes, hack computers and plant explosives while managing limited ammo and health packs. Police arrive in escalating waves with different tactics ranging from stealthy snipers to heavy armored units. You can choose to go loud immediately or try to stay hidden to avoid alerting reinforcements. The RPG elements let you unlock new perks and weapons as you level up your character. Each session feels tense because a single mistake often leads to a total wipe where everyone dies at once. You spend minutes planning routes and seconds reacting to chaos when things go wrong.

What Players Think

The PlayPile data shows this game holds an IGDB score of 74.4 out of 100 based on 488 ratings. Players describe the vibe as Intense, Competitive, Atmospheric and Strategic with small vote counts supporting each tag. The achievement system is notoriously difficult with 1328 total unlocks available but only a 7.2% average unlock rate across all players. The rarest task is Texas Treasures Part 4 which only 0.50% of users have earned. Most players seem to stick around for the long haul given the sheer number of challenges waiting for them in the database.

PlayPile's Take

Payday 2 costs a modest amount on most platforms and offers over a thousand achievements to chase. This title suits groups who want chaotic teamwork without needing perfect aim every second. The difficulty spikes when you face those rare achievement requirements or high-level police waves. You will spend dozens of hours grinding skills just to unlock specific gear combinations. If you have three friends willing to call out enemy positions constantly, this game delivers a solid experience. Skip it if you prefer solo campaigns since the core loop collapses without coordination.
