About Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time

PopCap Games and Electronic Arts released Plants vs. Zombies 2 in August 2013 for Android and iOS devices. This tower defense sequel sends Crazy Dave and his time-traveling partner Penny back 4500 years to Ancient Egypt after a spicy taco mishap. You build defensive lines using sun-producing plants to stop waves of zombies across different eras. The game mixes tactical planning with real-time action as you defend your lawn from multiple angles. It serves as a direct follow-up to the original hit but adds new mechanics and a fresh narrative hook involving time travel. Players face Dr. Zomboss again while exploring historical settings filled with unique threats.

Gameplay

Each session involves placing specific plant units on a grid before zombie waves arrive. You collect sun resources generated by plants like Sunflowers to afford stronger defenses such as Peashooters or Wall-nuts. The core loop requires constant adjustment as zombies approach from the right side of the screen. New levels introduce gimmicks like time travel mechanics that shift the background and alter gameplay rules. You unlock new characters and upgrades between missions through in-game currency. Controls remain simple with a tap-to-select system for mobile devices. Multiplayer modes allow head-to-head competition against other players to test your strategy skills.

What Players Think

PlayPile members rate this title heavily based on actual play data. The IGDB score sits at 75.9 out of 100 from 109 ratings, showing solid approval. Average completion rates suggest most users finish the main campaign but struggle with later time periods. Community moods lean toward nostalgic satisfaction mixed with frustration over difficulty spikes in Ancient Egypt stages. Review snippets frequently mention the addictive nature of collecting all plant variants. The average playtime extends well beyond 40 hours for completionists chasing achievements. Critics note that while the core loop holds up, some levels feel unbalanced without premium upgrades.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for players who enjoy fast-paced strategy without needing complex controls. It is a free-to-play title with optional purchases that can speed up progress through tough levels. Achievements are plentiful and encourage replaying levels to find all collectibles. The price barrier is low but the grind for resources increases significantly in later eras. You should play this if you want a solid tower defense experience on your phone without needing a console. Do not expect a perfect balance in every level, as some require specific plant combinations to succeed.

Storyline

After the events of the game Plants vs. Zombies where the player defeated Dr. Zomboss at the rooftop of the house, zombies once again attacked the front yard and after the zombies are all defeated, the player gets the hot sauce and gave it to Crazy Dave. Crazy Dave ate his taco, and wanting to eat the taco again, he wants to time-travel and the player is introduced to his partner, Penny, a supercar that can time travel. Unfortunately, they went back to Ancient Egypt, revealing that they time traveled 4500 years into the past. And the journey goes on!
