About Pokémon Yellow Version: Special Pikachu Edition

Game Freak released this 1998 title as an enhanced edition of the original Red and Blue games for Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It arrived later on Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console systems. The premise follows Ash Ketchum's anime adventures closely, forcing players to start with a Pikachu that refuses to evolve. You travel through the Kanto region to catch all 151 species of Pokémon. This version adds key features like your starter following you on the overworld map. It remains a single-player adventure with some multiplayer trading options. The core loop involves exploring towns, battling gym leaders, and stopping Team Rocket from taking over the world.

Gameplay

You move through cities and routes using directional inputs to encounter wild creatures in random battles. Combat happens turn-based where you select attacks like Thunderbolt or Tackle while managing status effects. Your Pikachu stays by your side during exploration but does not fight unless you order it to engage. You trade with other players to complete the Pokédex since some evolutions require special exchange items. The game tracks progress through eight gym badges before challenging the Elite Four. Battles feel methodical rather than action-oriented, relying on type advantages and strategic team composition. You spend hours grinding levels in tall grass or solving minor puzzles to unlock new areas.

What Players Think

Players rate this version highly with an IGDB score of 81.4 out of 100 based on 517 ratings. Community discussions often highlight the cooperative nature of trading and the strategic depth required for endgame battles. Average playtime ranges from 25 to 35 hours depending on completion goals. Review snippets praise the faithful anime adaptation and the charm of having Pikachu follow you everywhere. Users describe the atmosphere as nostalgic yet still engaging today. The mood tags show a strong preference for strategic gameplay, with three voters explicitly selecting that tag. Only one user found the mechanics mind-bending while others focused on the atmospheric journey through Kanto.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for RPG fans who value completionism and trading mechanics over fast action. You should buy it if you want to see the original 151 Pokémon in their classic sprite form. The price on modern platforms varies but often costs under twenty dollars. There are no major achievement systems tied to this specific release since it predates that feature set. Avoid this title only if you dislike turn-based combat or repetitive level grinding. It stands as a solid entry point for newcomers who missed the Game Boy era.

Storyline

Like Pokémon Red and Blue, Yellow takes place in the region of Kanto, which features habitats for 151 Pokémon species. The objectives remain the same as well, though some differences exist along the way. For example, in the beginning, the player is not given an option of choosing one of three starters. Instead, a wild Pikachu that Professor Oak catches becomes player's Pokémon, while the rival character takes an Eevee that was intended for the player. The plot takes from the anime, and features characters that were not featured in the game or have been enhanced to resemble their anime characters, including Jessie, James, Meowth, Nurse Joy and Officer Jenny. Similar to the anime, Pikachu refuses to evolve. Players are also given the opportunity to obtain the original three starters. As players quest on, they collect more Pokémon and use them to defeat the eight Gym Leaders and eventually the Elite Four, all the while battling Team Rocket, a gang devoted to using Pokémon in order to make themselves more powerful.
