PoPoLoCrois Monogatari is a 1996 RPG that mixes turn-based strategy with fantasy adventure. You play Pietro, a prince racing against time to rescue his comatose mother from the underworld. Partnered with a witch named Narcia, you’ll navigate dungeons and battlefields using a three-member party. Each character gains new abilities and classes as they level, letting you tweak roles mid-game. Terrain and positioning heavily influence combat outcomes, making every move feel calculated. The game stands out for its tight loop of planning and execution. While not widely remembered, it carved a niche for its blend of tactical depth and character growth. Over 25 years later, it remains a curious artifact of early PlayStation experimentation. Its influence is subtle but present in later strategy-RPG hybrids. The story’s emotional core, Pietro’s desperation, grounds the mechanics without overloading them. Short, sharp, and strangely ahead of its time.
The main character is the prince of the Popolocrois kingdom, Pietro. PoLoCRoIS Monogatari starts at the night of Pietro's 10th birthday, when he learns that his mother, who he thought was long dead, was found in a coma. Pietro sets out into a journey along with the apprentice forest witch Narcia to save his mother's soul from the underworld.
