Prince of Persia is a platform action game where you race against time to rescue a princess trapped by the villain Jaffar. You navigate 20 treacherous levels filled with traps like moving floors, deadly spikes, and flaming walls while dodging enemies from skeletal soldiers to enchanted warriors. The SNES version improves on the original with sharper graphics, tighter controls, and expanded level design. A training mode helps master running, jumping, and swordplay, but precision and quick thinking are crucial to survive Jaffar’s deadly traps and reach the princess before the hourglass empties. The SNES release extends the original’s 12-level campaign to 20, doubling the time limit to 120 minutes without easing the challenge. Critically acclaimed for its tight gameplay and clever animation, this version remains a standout in the platform genre. Every decision matters, potions can heal or harm, and one misstep means restarting. The game’s demanding yet fair design earned it a place as one of the most celebrated platformers of the 16-bit era.
The game is set in medieval Persia. While the sultan is fighting a war in a foreign land, his vizier Jaffar, a wizard, seizes power. His only obstacle to the throne is the Sultan's daughter. Jaffar locks her in a tower and orders her to become his wife, or she would die within 60 minutes (extended to 120 minutes in the Super NES version, which has longer and harder levels). The game's unnamed protagonist, whom the Princess loves, is thrown prisoner into the palace dungeons. In order to free her, he must escape the dungeons, get to the palace tower and defeat Jaffar before time runs out.
