About

Puyo Pop is a puzzle game where you chain together colorful gelatinous blobs to clear boards and unleash chain reactions. Players match groups of four or more Puyos to send them exploding, with each move adding new blobs to the grid. The goal is to outsmart opponents by filling their screens or completing level-specific challenges. The story mode follows Arle as she tracks down scattered runes across the world, chasing the mischievous Carbuncle through a series of whimsical stages. Gameplay loops around strategic placement and timing, with a focus on creating explosive combos to gain the upper hand. The game’s charm lies in its offbeat narrative, which shifts from fantasy quests to a surprisingly absurd hot spring-themed climax. While simple mechanics might feel familiar, the quirky characters and lighthearted tone set it apart from typical puzzle fare. With local multiplayer support and a runtime that fits short sessions, it’s a brisk, nostalgic pick for handheld puzzle fans. Its cult following persists among retro gamers, though modern titles offer more depth. Still, the goofy story and tactile blob-matching remain oddly memorable.

Storyline

The Dark Prince is once again up to no good. He splits up five gold runes, and they are handed off to different individuals across the globe. Dark Prince then sets up a Puyo Puyo contest. Carbuncle runs off for it, and Arle give chase, thus starting her strange journey to collect the runes and find Carbuncle. At the end, it is revealed that the Runes are actually a ticket for Dark Prince and Arle to go and bathe at some Hot Springs. Arle, however, doesn't realize that the ticket is for her and throws it away, foiling Dark Prince once again and leaving him to cry hysterically.
