About Resident Evil Code: Veronica X

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X arrived on March 22, 2001 as a polished port by Nextech for Capcom. This title sits firmly in the survival horror genre alongside action and puzzle solving elements. Players guide Claire Redfield across PlayStation 2, GameCube, Dreamcast, PS3, and PS4 systems. The story picks up three months after the Raccoon City incident as she hunts her brother Chris. Her search leads her to a captured state on a remote island facility run by Umbrella Corporation. The narrative features a mad aristocrat and T-Virus outbreaks that force players to survive against zombies and mutated beasts while trying to escape the isolated location.

Gameplay

Sessions involve managing limited inventory space while hunting for keys and ammo in claustrophobic corridors. You control Claire with standard analog sticks to aim her handgun or shotgun at enemies that stagger before falling. The game requires frequent reloading and strategic retreats when surrounded by multiple foes. Puzzle solving happens through item combinations found in storage rooms or on corpse bodies. A distinct feature is the inclusion of a playable character named Steve who joins for specific segments with his own weapon loadout. Cutscenes trigger often to advance the plot, adding nearly nine minutes of new footage compared to the original release. You must balance exploration with resource conservation as the T-Virus infection spreads across the map.

What Players Think

Critics and players have given this version a solid IGDB score of 74.3 out of 100 based on 135 ratings. The community vibe suggests a classic title that holds up well despite its age. Average playtime hovers around 8 to 10 hours for a standard run through the main story. Review snippets often praise the improved graphics and the added Steve segments as worthwhile upgrades over the Dreamcast original. Completion rates show most players finish the game, though some get stuck on later puzzles involving complex item combinations. The mood remains nostalgic with many users citing it as a definitive version of the Code: Veronica experience for modern consoles.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth your time if you enjoy methodical survival horror that prioritizes tension over combat speed. At its current price point, it offers significant value compared to buying the original Dreamcast disc alone. You will earn several achievements by finding hidden items or completing specific objectives without taking damage. The game is not perfect since older control schemes feel stiff on modern pads, but the atmosphere remains effective. Skip this if you want fast-paced shooters. Play it if you want to see Claire Redfield face a mad aristocrat in a virus-ridden prison.

Storyline

Three months after the events of Resident Evil 2, Claire Redfield is still looking for her brother Chris. She infiltrates Umbrella Corporation's headquarters in Paris, where she is captured and knocked out. When she comes to, she finds herself in a prison on a remote island. Freed by a friendly guard, Claire faces several problems. Not only is the island under attack by an unknown assailant, but there has been another outbreak of the T-Virus and the island is crawling with zombies and other mutated creatures. Claire not only has to face the undead, but also the commander of the base, a mad aristocrat with family ties to the origins of Umbrella Corporation and the T-Virus. And escaping from the island is only the beginning of Claire's ordeals.
