Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles is a first-person on-rails shooter where players focus on aiming and firing without controlling movement. The game splits into three acts revisiting events from earlier entries in the series with updated visuals and scenarios. One player or two in co-op mode can take turns as either Leon or Claire, switching between characters during set pieces. A visible sidekick character appears onscreen to provide context and support. The PS3 version adds high-definition graphics while the Wii version uses motion controls for aiming. The game’s strongest feature is its co-op flexibility letting friends share the action across both platforms. While the script borrows heavily from past stories it repackages them with fresh set pieces and optional challenges. Community feedback often highlights the ease of play and nostalgic appeal though some note the repetitive structure. The split between PS3 and Wii versions also created a unique cross-platform dynamic for co-op sessions.
The game's plot is retelling the events of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Code:Veronica, with a third act which ties the two together. For the Resident Evil 2 segment, the player takes control of protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, with Sherry Birkin acting as an escort character in one chapter. The Code: Veronica chapter features Claire, accompanied by fellow Rockfort Island prisoner Steve Burnside, and later her brother Chris Redfield.
