Cavia

Japan Founded 2000

Cavia was a Japanese video game developer best known for the Drakengard series, the first title in the Nier series and two Resident Evil rail shooters. The company name was apparently an acronym for Computer Amusement Visualizer, although the company web site also claims it refers to caviar.

Smaller numbers appeared on the PlayStation Portable, original Xbox, and later consoles like the Xbox One and Series X|S. Their catalog covers a wide range of genres. Adventure and Fighting games were their most common categories with seven titles each. They also produced six Shooters, five Role-playing games, four Hack and slash or Beat 'em up games, and three Strategy and Visual Novel entries. Their highest-rated project was Nier Replicant from 2010, which scored 88.3 out of 100. Fate/unlimited codes followed with a 79.7 rating, and KORG DS-10 Plus earned a 79 score. Recent releases from their final years included Suzumiya Haruhi no Chokuretsu titles in 2009 alongside the Nier entries. While they had a few standout hits, the majority of their work received average or below-average reception.
