About Resistance: Fall of Man

Resistance: Fall of Man dropped on November 11, 2006 as a launch title for the PlayStation 3. Insomniac Games built this shooter set in an alternate 1951 where insect-like aliens called the Chimera have conquered most of Europe. You play as Sgt. Nathan Hale, the sole survivor of a US squad wiped out during an ambush near York. The game launched on PS3 with single player and multiplayer modes. It tells a gritty story of survival against overwhelming odds while showcasing early next-gen graphics. This was one of the first titles to prove what the new console could actually do beyond just looking pretty.

Gameplay

You control Nathan Hale using standard analog sticks for movement and aiming while pressing face buttons to shoot or reload. Combat feels heavy and deliberate since you often face enemies in tight corridors or open city streets. Your main advantage is a resistance virus that lets you regenerate health quickly after taking damage, so staying mobile is key. You will spend most sessions scavenging crates for ammo and finding new weapons like the shotgun or assault rifle. The campaign includes co-op split screen modes where a second player joins in on specific missions. Multiplayer matches let you fight others using similar tech and tactics to destroy objectives before time runs out.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows an IGDB score of 78.5 out of 100 based on 125 ratings from the community. Average playtime sits around 9 hours for a standard campaign run, though completionists often push past 12 hours to find every collectible. The community mood leans toward nostalgic appreciation since this title defined the PS3 era for many players. Critics and users alike note that the co-op experience remains one of the strongest selling points today. Review snippets frequently mention the impressive enemy variety and the shocking difficulty spikes in later levels. Few players finish the game on the hardest setting without multiple retries, which adds to the challenge rating.

PlayPile's Take

Resistance: Fall of Man is worth your time if you want a story-driven shooter with distinct mechanics. The price varies depending on where you buy it but the value comes from the solid campaign and unique co-op features. There are no achievement tracking systems in the original release so you cannot earn digital trophies here. This game suits players who enjoy methodical combat rather than fast-paced arcade shooting. The narrative does not hold back on grim details about war and invasion. You should play it if you have a PS3 or emulator ready to go because it remains a technical showcase for that hardware generation.

Storyline

In the 1900s, an insect-like alien race known as the Chimera arrive in Russia. Using advanced technology, they infect hundreds of innocent civilians and subject them to artificial evolution, creating a diverse army of creatures ranging from simple foot soldiers to spider-like giants. By 1949, all of Europe has fallen to the Chimera. The following year, a vast invasion force tunnels under the English Channel, conquering much of England and leaving only scattered pockets of human resistance. In 1951, the United States, despite taking a position of neutrality in the conflict, sends a task force to assist the UK as part of "Operation Deliverance". Among the soldiers is Army Ranger Sgt. Nathan Hale. However, soon after landing in York, he and his squad are ambushed by enemy troops, who infect them with the Chimera virus. Hale, the only survivor, discovers that he has an innate resistance to full infection. Instead, he gains increased strength and reflexes, the ability to instantly heal light injuries, and gold-colored irises, a common trait of the Chimera.
