"He may be an ugly little punk, but Styx still offers the player pure and largely unadulterated hardcore stealth action. It's still rare to find action games with a proper stealth emphasis, and rarer still to find them done as well as Styx: Master of Shadows. If you're looking for a game with good graphics and an emphasis on sneaking around in the dark and trying to achieve your aims with as little blood spilled as possible, you have your title right here."

ShadowCaster throws you into a world where bending reality is your weapon. You play a member of a displaced alien species trying to reclaim ancient shape-shifting abilities to stop a sorcerer’s takeover. The game mixes first-person shooting with inventory-based puzzles and RPG-style stat management. You’ll switch forms to bypass obstacles, solve environmental challenges, and blast enemies in a mix of action and strategy. Combat feels twitchy but unforgiving, with limited resources forcing careful planning between gunfights and stealthier solutions. Though dated by today’s standards, ShadowCaster’s hybrid design was ahead of its time for 1993. It leans heavily into its sci-fi mythology without overexplaining, letting players piece together lore through scattered logs and environmental storytelling. A small but vocal group of retro gamers still praises its ambitious blend of genres, though its difficulty curve and clunky DOS interface may test modern patience. The game’s cult following hints at its bold vision, even if execution feels rough around the edges.
