Shockman mixes shooter, platform, and beat 'em up action in a side-scrolling adventure. You play as Arnold or Sonya, switching between fast-paced shooting sections and platform combat where you jump and use special moves. Eight stages split between these modes let you tackle enemies alone or with a partner. Co-op modes add shared health and a combined attack called Team Shockbeam that clears crowds in a flash. The co-op mechanics stand out most with shared resources and teamwork-based attacks. The story follows Arnold and Sonya rescuing a captured professor while stopping an alien empire’s invasion. Originally released in 1991, it keeps the energetic chaos of classic arcade action. The blend of genres and need to coordinate with a partner make it a niche pick for those craving old-school couch co-op.
Shockman takes about two years after the original Kaizou Choujin Shubibinman. Arnold (Tasuke in the Japanese version) is no longer a student and works as a cook in a local restaurant. Sonya (Kyapiko in Japanese version) remains a student. Since the fall of the Dark Skull, Doc has constantly suspected that another invasion was coming sending Arnold and Sonya on searches for the new invaders although never finding anything. However, one day, after Doc is kidnapped, Arnold and Sonya find out that an alien empire led by Ryo is planning to take over the world. Also, two other villains have appeared with similar powers to Arnold and Sonya. They are dark Shubibinman named Jeeta and Mue. Arnold and Sonya must now rescue Doc, stop Ryo from taking over the world, and avoid being killed by Jeeta and Mue.
