Space Channel 5 is a chaotic 25th-century romp where you play as Ulala, a space reporter fighting off alien baddies using dance moves as weapons. The Morolians have zapped Earth with a dance-based hypnotic ray and it’s up to you to copy their grooves with precise timing to break the spell. Gameplay shifts between third-person shooter segments and rhythm-based minigames where button mashing and timing matter. The story leans into absurd sci-fi humor with plenty of wink-at-the-cam moments. What sticks out is the game’s offbeat charm and the way it slaps together genres you wouldn’t expect. The split-screen co-op lets two players take turns dancing or fighting, which feels ahead of its time for a 1999 title. Community buzz often highlights its cult status and the surprise difficulty of some rhythm sections. With a Metacritic score of 80 and a dedicated fanbase, it’s a weirdly delightful relic that still pops.
