About Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike arrived in arcades on May 12, 1999, under the hand of Capcom Production Studio 2. This title serves as the definitive conclusion to the third main series entry before the franchise moved into new territory. The roster expanded with five fresh faces while existing warriors received updated stages and voice acting to continue the narrative from 2nd Impact. Players fight in a high-stakes environment where every match feels like a life-or-death battle between martial artists. The game runs exclusively on arcade hardware, though its design philosophy set a new standard for the genre. It remains a technical marvel that demands precision from anyone willing to pick up the controller and try their luck against the best players in the world.

Gameplay

Matches rely on a tight system of parries rather than simple blocking. You must time your input within a specific frame window to negate an opponent's attack entirely. This mechanic creates a constant flow where standing still is death. Players learn to bait feints and punish mistakes with rapid combos that deal significant chip damage. The roster includes characters like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and the mysterious Twelve, each with distinct move sets and pacing. A typical session involves mastering these defensive tools while chaining attacks together before your opponent can recover. Single player modes let you work through a gauntlet of computer opponents, but the true challenge appears when facing other humans at an arcade cabinet. The controls feel responsive yet punishing, requiring you to memorize frame data rather than just reacting instinctively.

What Players Think

Critics and players have rated this title highly across platforms. IGDB lists a score of 86.2 out of 100 based on 107 ratings. Community moods reflect deep respect for the game's mechanical depth despite its steep learning curve. Most dedicated fans spend over forty hours mastering the parry system and character matchups. Review snippets frequently mention how the game rewards patience and study over button mashing. While completion rates vary depending on the player base, those who stick with it often reach high ranks in local leaderboards. The atmosphere in competitive circles is intense, with many viewing this as the peak of 2D fighting design. Even years later, the community continues to analyze frame data and share strategies for beating top-tier opponents.

PlayPile's Take

This game is for players who want a challenge that tests their reflexes and strategic planning every single match. The price varies by platform if you find a port, but the original arcade experience remains unmatched in terms of control precision. You will unlock numerous achievements by mastering specific characters or completing difficult modes without taking damage. Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike does not hold your hand, and it offers no easy ways to win. It demands hours of practice before you feel comfortable. If you can handle the frustration of losing repeatedly while learning the parry timing, this title offers a depth that few other games provide today.

Storyline

3rd Strike tells the story of what happened after the events of Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and the conclusion of the Third World Warrior Tournament (fourth, retroactively). Among the battles that occured during this time: Alex vs. Ryu - Ryu encounters and defeats Alex comprehensively, leading Alex to become obsessed with fighting Ryu again and becoming a better fighter. Ryu vs. Ken - The two friends face off once more and Ryu again narrowly defeats Ken, lauding him as his worthiest opponent. Chun-Li vs. Urien - Chun-Li demands the return of a kidnapped child and Urien agrees to comply if Chun-Li can provide an entertaining match. The victor is unknown, although it is implied Chun-Li won, as the child is returned. Necro vs. Twelve - Upon learning the Necro and his female companion, Effie, survived the events of 2nd Impact, Necro's successor, Twelve, is ordered by either Gill or Urien to hunt down and exterminate them. While the official outcome of this battle is unknown, Necro's ending reveals that he and Effie likely survived the encounter. Twelve, in the meantime, is returned to Dr. Woo's lab to recuperate, and it is hinted that he has gained sentience, as his hollow eyes gain red irises. Akuma vs. Oro - Both have fought each other after an encounter, but declared to cease combat as there was no clear winner and both believed that a mutual death would occur had they continued.
