About Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike dropped in May 1999 from Capcom Production Studio 2 as the final evolution of the Third World Warrior saga. This arcade brawler added five fresh fighters to an already tight roster while refining the core mechanics that defined the series. The game continued the story threads left open by earlier entries, giving returning characters new stages and endings. You play on arcade cabinets or find ports later, but the original release set the standard for competitive fighting games. It focuses on high-speed combat where every frame matters and players must master complex defensive options to survive.

Gameplay

You control one of twelve fighters in a 2D plane where spacing dictates survival. The core loop involves blocking attacks using parries, a mechanic that rewards precise timing over button mashing. You execute special moves by inputting specific directional sequences combined with attack buttons. Matches end when health bars deplete or the timer runs out. A typical session involves training modes to memorize frame data and arcade modes to progress through computer opponents. Controls feel responsive, requiring sharp reflexes for dodging and countering. Multiplayer matches demand deep knowledge of matchups since a single mistake often leads to a combo finish that ends the round instantly.

What Players Think

Players on PlayPile hold this title in high regard with an IGDB score of 86.2 out of 100 based on 107 ratings. The community average playtime sits around 45 hours for those who focus on mastering the roster, though casual players spend less time. Completion rates show that only 30% of users unlock every character ending without assistance. Review snippets frequently mention the steep learning curve as a barrier to entry. Moods within the forum lean toward "intense" and "satisfied," with many noting the game remains relevant nearly two decades after release. Critics praise the balance but warn newcomers about the difficulty spike compared to other fighting games in the genre.

PlayPile's Take

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is a serious investment for anyone wanting to understand competitive fighting history. The price varies by platform, often reaching high amounts on secondary markets due to its rarity. There are no modern achievement lists to chase, so value comes purely from skill progression. This title suits players who enjoy punishing difficulty and precise execution over casual fun. It lacks the accessibility of newer entries but offers depth that few games match. If you want a game that challenges your reflexes and patience without holding your hand, this is the one to play.

Storyline

3rd Strike tells the story of what happened after the events of Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and the conclusion of the Third World Warrior Tournament (fourth, retroactively). Among the battles that occured during this time: Alex vs. Ryu - Ryu encounters and defeats Alex comprehensively, leading Alex to become obsessed with fighting Ryu again and becoming a better fighter. Ryu vs. Ken - The two friends face off once more and Ryu again narrowly defeats Ken, lauding him as his worthiest opponent. Chun-Li vs. Urien - Chun-Li demands the return of a kidnapped child and Urien agrees to comply if Chun-Li can provide an entertaining match. The victor is unknown, although it is implied Chun-Li won, as the child is returned. Necro vs. Twelve - Upon learning the Necro and his female companion, Effie, survived the events of 2nd Impact, Necro's successor, Twelve, is ordered by either Gill or Urien to hunt down and exterminate them. While the official outcome of this battle is unknown, Necro's ending reveals that he and Effie likely survived the encounter. Twelve, in the meantime, is returned to Dr. Woo's lab to recuperate, and it is hinted that he has gained sentience, as his hollow eyes gain red irises. Akuma vs. Oro - Both have fought each other after an encounter, but declared to cease combat as there was no clear winner and both believed that a mutual death would occur had they continued.
