"There was a moment where I was taking in the beautiful soundtrack, hovering over a tricky jump as cat Peach, and watching the glistening water below where the game really came together. It was then that I realized that Super Mario 3D World had achieved a level of platforming design that's close to perfection, and there was almost never a moment where I didn't have a smile on my face. This is the unequivocally the best Mario game since Galaxy 2, and it shows up anything the "New" series has ever done, and then some. Good work, Nintendo."

About Super Mario World

Super Mario World launched on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in late 1990 as a flagship title for the console. Nintendo EAD developed this 2D adventure platformer to define the system's library. The story puts Mario and Yoshi on Dinosaur Land after King Koopa kidnaps Princess Peach. Players navigate a less linear world map filled with castles and secret exits. This entry expanded the movement arsenal significantly compared to previous games. You can now glide, double jump, and carry enemies. The game arrived on multiple platforms later, including Wii U, New Nintendo 3DS, and various arcade cabinets. It remains the first mainline Super Mario title on the SNES hardware.

Gameplay

You control Mario or Luigi across expansive levels that reward exploration over speed running. The core loop involves jumping on enemies, grabbing power-ups like the Super Leaf or Cape Feather, and finding secret exits in each stage. Yoshi acts as a crucial partner who can swallow foes whole and spit them out at opponents. His floating ability lets you clear large gaps that would kill Mario alone. You collect dinosaur eggs containing friends to earn extra lives or score multipliers. The save system means you do not need to restart from the beginning after every death. Controls feel tight and responsive, allowing for precise wall jumps and midair turns. Multiplayer modes let a second player join as Luigi with distinct controls that prioritize speed over precision.

What Players Think

Critics and players rate this title exceptionally high across all major aggregators. Metacritic holds a 92 out of 100 score while OpenCritic shows a 93 average with 95.83% of critics recommending the game. IGDB lists a 96 rating based on 1,874 user evaluations. The PlayPile community moods skew heavily toward wholesome experiences, with users describing it as emotional and story-driven despite the simple premise. Average playtime for completionists often exceeds forty hours due to the density of hidden areas. Review snippets praise the definitive nature of the experience. God is a Geek gave it a perfect 100 and joked that Zelda should get similar treatment. Nintendo Life also awarded 100, noting how it balances 3D concepts within a 2D space without losing the iconic feel.

PlayPile's Take

This game belongs to anyone who wants to master precise platforming mechanics in a polished package. The price varies depending on the platform you choose, but digital copies on Wii U and Switch Online remain affordable compared to physical SNES carts. Achievements are plentiful for those seeking 100% completion of every map exit. You will find yourself backtracking through levels to uncover secret routes that change the entire flow of the game. It does not rely on complex narrative beats or microtransactions to hold attention. The sheer density of secrets keeps the gameplay fresh long after the main story ends. If you want a platformer that respects your time and skill, this is the standard.

Storyline

Mario is having a vacation in Dinosaur Land when he learns that Princess Peach Toadstool has been kidnapped by the evil King Koopa Bowser. When Mario starts searching for her he finds a giant egg with a dinosaur named Yoshi hatching out of it. Yoshi tells Mario that his fellow dinosaurs have been imprisoned in eggs by Bowser's underlings. The intrepid plumber has to travel to their castles, rescue the dinosaurs, and eventually face King Koopa himself, forcing him to release the princess.
