Taishou Kitan is a visual novel set in early 20th century Japan where a wealthy woman hides her emotions to please her family. After surviving an attack by a feral supernatural beast called a Stray Oni, she discovers her rare ability to command such creatures. The story follows her enrollment at a secret academy where humans and Oni form partnerships. Players navigate school life, character interactions, and battles against rogue Oni through branching dialogue and timed action sequences. The game balances relationship building with its supernatural mystery plot. The Taishou Era setting gives the game a distinct historical flair few visual novels explore. With over 20 hours of main story content and multiple character routes, it offers depth beyond typical entries in the genre. Its mix of school life and monster-hunting themes earned a 78% on GameRankings from 2013 reviews. A direct sequel called Kotonoha Sakura was released two years later. The protagonist's struggle between duty and desire remains a standout element for fans of narrative-driven RPGs.
The time is the Taishou Era. The protagonist is a high class girl who stifles her true feelings for the sake of her family. By chance she became aware of the existence of "Oni" because of a series of strange murder incidents. One day she was attacked by a "Stray Oni" that had lost all reason and was saved by a man named Kusaka. There she became aware of the fact that she had the qualities of a "Master". From then on her life completely changed as she enrolled into Seiryouin, a school where Oni's and their Masters make contracts and learn together. While getting used to her new environment the protagonist learns that the strange murder incidents are the work of Stray Oni's and makes the decision to fight back together with her partner.
