About Twisted Metal: Black

Twisted Metal: Black arrived on June 18 2001 as the fifth entry in a series known for chaotic vehicular combat. Incognito Entertainment built this title specifically for the PlayStation 2 before it saw ports on PS3 and PS4 decades later. You drive heavily armed cars through urban arenas to eliminate other drivers while surviving explosions and environmental hazards. This installment stands out because the narrative takes a darker turn than its predecessors. It plays like an alternate reality where the protagonist Black hunts down a sinister version of Calypso. The game blends racing mechanics with intense shooter elements to create a gritty atmosphere that feels distinct from the cartoonish tone of earlier entries in the franchise.

Gameplay

Sessions revolve around driving a unique vehicle equipped with heavy weaponry and special abilities. You navigate arenas filled with ramps and destructible objects while targeting opponents who often have different strategies. The core loop involves using your car as both a tank and a missile platform to deplete enemy health bars before they do the same to you. You can activate special attacks that consume energy or use environmental traps to gain an advantage. Multiplayer modes support split screen play for local battles or online matches through a later update. Controls feel tight even when vehicles are spinning out of control during high speed collisions. Each match requires quick reflexes and tactical positioning to survive the chaos on the track.

What Players Think

Critics and players have rated this title exceptionally well with a Metacritic score of 91 out of 100. PlayPile data shows that 85 percent of users completed the main campaign despite the steep difficulty curve in later levels. Average playtime sits at 12 hours for story mode but jumps to over 40 hours for those chasing 100% completion and multiplayer ranks. Community moods lean heavily toward nostalgic appreciation with many reviews citing the dark tone as a standout feature. Users frequently mention the satisfying destruction physics and the variety of unlockable vehicles in their feedback. No other site tracks these specific community metrics but the numbers confirm this remains a top tier entry in the genre for dedicated fans.

PlayPile's Take

This game works best for players who enjoy high stakes combat and do not mind a grim narrative tone. The price is reasonable on modern consoles given the content included in both single player and multiplayer modes. There are over 20 achievements to earn which adds significant value for completionists looking to master every vehicle. The story mode offers a compelling if short experience while the multiplayer retains active engagement years later. You should buy this if you want a well-polished shooter racer that respects your time without unnecessary filler. It stands as a definitive version of the concept rather than just another sequel in the series.

Storyline

Black is on a mission for another person to locate and murder Calypso. However the person who sent him has never before been seen and it is never revealed why exactly he is carrying out this mission. According to the original Twisted Metal created in the year 1995, in TM:B the entire storyline is darker, and is referred to as an "alternate universe," in comparison to the other Twisted Metal games. As stated, it is because it is all in Needles Kane's head. But there is even more to TM:B. Black, the driver of Manslaughter, made an appearance in TM(1995), Darkside's driver Mr. Ash's "lost" ending. In that ending he wants his demon "black" back, which makes one believe Mr. Ash is Satan. When he gets Black back, Calypso gets very upset. This is because Black is sent on a mission to kill a darker, more evil Calypso in the "Black" universe.
