Ultima Worlds Online: Origin was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game built by Origin Systems for PC. Players expected to continue the legacy of the original Ultima Online with new mechanics and expanded worlds. Development started in 1999 and continued through 2001 while Electronic Arts pushed marketing campaigns hard. The team aimed to create a seamless digital frontier where thousands could interact without loading screens. It promised deep customization and persistent world events that would evolve based on player actions. The project vanished suddenly when EA decided to cancel it in early 2001 after two years of work. Fans were left with nothing but screenshots and concept art since the game never reached a public release state. Community discussions still reference this lost title as a major missed opportunity for the genre during that era. Many players feel the cancellation hurt the franchise more than any other decision made by the publisher at the time. No official data exists on player counts because no one ever logged in to play the final version.
