Ultimate Air Combat is a 1992 shooter that splits each of its 36 missions into two distinct challenges. In the first half players control a jet from a cockpit view battling enemy planes while managing limited fuel. Surviving this leads to a second phase with an isometric perspective where destroying ground targets and installations becomes the priority. The single-player campaign focuses on precision and quick reflexes as you progress through escalating combat scenarios. The game’s structure stands out offering a mix of fast-paced aerial combat and strategic ground attacks. Each mission demands adapting to different mechanics balancing resource management with combat. Though dated by today’s standards the clear objectives and straightforward design made it a solid entry in the early ‘90s flight genre. Its final mission adds a satisfying challenge for those who make it that far.
The story begins when the White House calls an emergency meeting, where they reveal that the military dictator Don Gwano is using the high revenue from his large oil exports to fund his large army and navy. He is now attacking neighbouring countries and the president's military advisers have agreed that action needs to be taken. Rather than a full-scale invasion, they propose a tactic of quick lightning strikes to take out specific systems vital to Don Gwano's militaristic regime. As the top pilot in the military, the player is chosen to perform these attacks.
