Ultraman is a 1991 arcade brawler that pits the giant hero against classic monsters from the 1967 TV series. Players control Ultraman in one-on-one matches, using punches, kicks, grapples, and charged special moves. Victory requires draining an enemy’s regenerating health bar before landing the Specium Beam, a finishing attack that becomes riskier as opponents learn to dodge it. Each round lasts three minutes with three lives and no continues, forcing quick thinking and precise timing. The game sticks closely to its source material, replicating the look and enemies of the original Ultraman series. Its simple but punishing mechanics and time-based tension have earned it a cult following among retro fighters. Though it lacks modern depth, its direct combat and nostalgic appeal keep it relevant in niche circles. Players who grew up with the tokusatsu classic often cite it as a standout early arcade adaptation.
In the future, Earth must protect itself from alien invaders, a task handled by the Science Special Search Party. However, they are not alone in this endeavor. After crashing his ship on Earth while in pursuit of the evil alien Bemular, the super-being Ultraman is here to help whenever the attacking aliens prove too much for humanity alone to handle. Standing hundreds of feet tall with incredible strength and amazing abilities, he can only remain on Earth for a few minutes, and so must defeat his foes before his power drains completely.
