About Uncharted: Golden Abyss

Uncharted: Golden Abyss is an action-adventure title developed by SCE Bend Studio for the PlayStation Vita. It launched on December 17, 2011 as a flagship exclusive for the handheld console. The story serves as a prequel to the main series, placing Nathan Drake in Panama before his first big treasure hunt. Players follow Drake and archaeologist Marisa Chase as they investigate a massacre of Spanish conquistadors and a hidden Visigoth symbol. Their search leads them into the treacherous river basins and karst caverns of Central America while dodging a secret Spanish sect called the Sete Cidades. The game blends shooting, platforming, and puzzle solving into a tight single-player campaign designed specifically for portable play.

Gameplay

Sessions involve navigating vertical levels while switching between third-person shooting and climbing mechanics. You cross rooftops, slide down muddy riverbanks, and climb ancient stone walls using Vita-specific controls. The core loop requires aiming with the touch screen while moving characters across the environment. Combat mixes standard gunfights with quick-time events that happen during scripted sequences. Players solve environmental puzzles to unlock paths or reveal hidden collectibles scattered throughout the ruins. The camera angles adjust dynamically as you move through narrow corridors or open courtyards. Controls feel responsive despite the smaller screen, allowing for precise jumps and cover switching. You manage health packs found in crates while fending off waves of armed guards led by warlord Roberto Guerro.

What Players Think

PlayPile data shows this title holds an IGDB score of 76.5 out of 100 based on 121 user ratings. The community moods lean heavily toward nostalgia for the Vita era with a solid completion rate of 84 percent among those who own it. Average playtime sits at roughly six hours, which fits the handheld structure well. Critics and players alike note that while the graphics stretch the hardware limits, the pacing remains tight. Review snippets frequently mention the touch screen controls as a standout feature that defines the experience. Some users rate it lower due to camera issues in specific cavern sections, but most agree it captures the Uncharted spirit effectively. The achievement unlock rate is high because the game does not demand extensive grinding or obscure puzzle solutions.

PlayPile's Take

This title is worth your time if you own a PlayStation Vita and want a complete story without needing a TV. At launch it was priced as a premium exclusive, though used copies are now very cheap on secondary markets. The achievement count is modest compared to other entries, with most players finishing the main campaign in one sitting. It captures the essence of Drake's adventures despite some technical limitations of the hardware. You should play this if you enjoy linear shooters that rely on set pieces rather than open exploration. The ending ties directly into the lore of the first console game without feeling like a rehash. Skip it only if you hate short campaigns or require high-resolution graphics to stay engaged.

Storyline

The events of Golden Abyss take place place prior to Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Adventurer Nathan Drake accompanies old friend Jason Dante to a Panama dig site headed by the mistrustful Marisa Chase. At the site, they find the bodies of poisoned Spanish conquistadors, and a grave marker with a Visigoth symbol. After Dante has to leave due to a phone call, Marisa shows Drake an amulet she hid from Dante, inherited from her grandfather Vincent Perez and they agree to team up. Nathan and Marisa are then attacked and captured by Dante's real partner, warlord Roberto Guerro, but the pair escape. They go to Perez's house, who hired Dante to continue his research after a terminal cancer diagnosis; Dante paid off Guerro for access to the site in return for a share of the treasure that Guerro will use to fund his conflict, while Marisa went there to finish her family's work. The pair learn that the marker referred to the Sete Cidades, an ancient Christian sect dedicated to finding the Seven Cities of Gold. Friar Marcos de Niza, a member of the sect, had been part of a failed expedition led by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado to find the city of Quivira.
