Venture is a 1981 arcade shooter where you guide Winky through a maze-like dungeon. The screen splits between a top-down map and side-scrolling action. On the map you choose rooms to explore while avoiding roaming enemies. These foes kill you instantly if you touch them. Once inside a room you can fight smaller monsters and grab treasure but a time limit forces you to leave before a relentless boss arrives. Every level ends when you collect all treasures across its rooms and move to the next layout. The game’s tension comes from tight resource management and quick reflexes. Players must balance treasure hunting with evading deadly enemies in both open corridors and confined rooms. Its split-screen design and punishing boss mechanics were ahead of its time. Available on multiple 8-bit systems for its era the game shows a surprising amount of variety across its dungeon layouts. Classic arcade simplicity with punishing difficulty makes for a short but intense experience.
