Zero Wing is a side-scrolling shooter where you pilot a spacecraft against waves of alien forces. Players can pick up enemy ships with a tractor beam to use as shields, a twist that sets it apart from similar games. It plays with tight controls and fast-paced action, letting you fly solo or team up with another player. The game mixes straightforward shooting with strategic uses of captured enemies, adding depth to its arcade-style gameplay. The game's most infamous trait isn't in its design but its legacy. A poorly translated instruction card on the Sega Genesis version birthed the "All your base" meme, still circulating decades later. Despite this, the core experience holds up, offering cooperative play and a surprisingly goofy storyline about rogue cyborgs. It runs on modern systems and retains its 80s charm. A cult favorite with a niche following, it's proof that a game can live on through quirks as much as quality.
Set in 2101, the game follows the signing of a peace treaty between the United Nations and CATS, an alien cyborg. However, CATS breaks the covenant and takes control of the Japanese space colonies. The protagonist Trent leads a ZIG space craft, which had managed to escape from the mothership destroyed by CATS, with the aim to defeat enemy forces, avenge the mothership and its crew and liberate the Earth.
