AlphaDream at a Glance

AlphaDream operated as a Japanese developer and publisher from its founding in 2000 until it filed for bankruptcy in 2019. The company released seventeen games during its active period between 2001 and 2018. Most of their output focused on Nintendo hardware, with the Nintendo 3DS hosting seven titles and the Nintendo DS hosting five others. They also made games for the Game Boy Advance, Wii U, and Game Boy Color. Their catalog leans heavily toward Adventure and Role-playing genres, which account for nine to ten releases each. The studio built its reputation by working closely with Nintendo on the Mario & Luigi series. This partnership produced some of their most acclaimed work. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story from 2009 holds a rating of 92.7 out of 100. Earlier entries like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time also received high marks above 85. These three titles sit alongside two other great-rated games in their portfolio. The quality of their later work showed a downward trend. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team dropped to 79.2, while Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam fell further to 70. Despite this decline, all five rated titles still achieved scores between 60 and 80 or higher. No games in their reviewed list received poor or mixed ratings. Their production volume shifted as they moved into the new millennium. The company released ten games during the 2000s and six titles throughout the 2010s. By the end of 2018, they were still releasing older titles like Bowser's Inside Story and Superstar Saga on newer systems alongside original entries like Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The studio employed former developers from Square before its closure. While their later entries did not reach the heights of their early successes, their average IGDB rating across five rated games stands at 82.5. Their work remains a significant part of Nintendo's handheld history even as the company is no longer active.
