Apogee Entertainment, formerly Apogee Software, LLC, is an American video game publisher based in Rowlett, Texas. The company was founded by Terry Nagy in 2008 after he licensed the rights to the name and logo from Scott Miller and his company, 3D Realms, which had used both previously. After reorganizing as Apogee Entertainment in 2021, it hired Miller for its publishing operations. The original Apogee Software was founded by Scott Miller in 1987 and utilized the Apogee name and logo until 1996, when the company adopted the trade name "3D Realms".[1] In 2008, Terry Nagy, a college friend of Miller, licensed the rights to the "Apogee Software" name and logo, as well as the rights to several games developed under that name, and established a company to publish further titles using the moniker. The publisher's opening was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo on July 14, 2008. The company immediately announced the Duke Nukem Trilogy, three new games in the Duke Nukem series—Critical Mass, Chain Reaction, and Proving Grounds—to be released on Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. A co-publishing deal was reached with Deep Silver to ensure wide distribution of the titles. Critical Mass was released for Nintendo DS in May 2011, however, its PlayStation Portable version, as well as Chain Reaction and Proving Grounds, ultimately stayed unreleased. Apogee Software, LLC released Interceptor Entertainment's Rise of the Triad and the Apogee Throwback Pack in July 2013, as well as Radical Heroes: Crimson City Crisis from Mad Unicorn Games in 2016. During 3D Realms' "Realms Deep 2020" event in September 2020, Apogee Software, LLC announced remastered editions of the original Rise of the Triad (co-published by 3D Realms) and Crystal Caves. The company announced it was rebranding itself to Apogee Entertainment in April 2021 and focusing solely on indie game publishing. Alongside this announcement, the company announced that they brought on Miller to assist in publishing efforts.
Apogee Entertainment operates as a publisher based in Rowlett, Texas with a clear focus on independent titles across PC and console platforms. Founded in 2008 by Terry Nagy who licensed the name from Scott Miller, the company reorganized in April 2021 to concentrate exclusively on indie game publishing. This shift included bringing Miller back into their operations. The publisher has released twelve games since its inception with nine titles appearing in the 2020s alone. Their catalog spans multiple genres but leans heavily toward Indie and Adventure categories. Most of their output targets PC users while also reaching Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Linux, and Mac systems. The quality of their recent work shows a strong upward trend compared to earlier efforts. Four rated titles average a score of 78.1 out of 100. Two of these games achieved great ratings above 80 while two others scored in the good range between 60 and 79. There are no mixed or poor rated titles on record for this publisher. Turbo Overkill released in 2023 stands as their highest-rated game with a score of 85.3 followed by Total Chaos which earned 82.1 points in 2025. Rise of the Triad: Ludicrous Edition and Monster Bash HD also received solid reviews from players. The company faced challenges during its earlier years when it tried to expand into handheld gaming with a Duke Nukem trilogy that largely failed to release beyond one Nintendo DS version. They did manage to publish Interceptor Entertainment's Rise of the Triad in 2013 and Radical Heroes: Crimson City Crisis in 2016 before shifting focus. Their current strategy involves remastering classic properties alongside new indie projects like Littlelands and Lucid scheduled for late 2026. Recent releases such as Rising Heat and Quest Master show they maintain a steady stream of content despite the smaller total number of games compared to larger industry players. Their approach seems centered on revitalizing older franchises while supporting modern independent developers.
