Belgium Founded 1995 Website

APPEAL is a Franco-Belgian video game development studio founded in 1995. In 1999 the studio developed Outcast, one of the first open-world video games, critically acclaimed for its graphics and gameplay. Relaunched in 2015 by Yves Grolet, Yann Robert and Franck Sauer, APPEAL is now continuing with the objective of creating fun, multifaceted and living worlds that use artificial intelligence systems to generate interactive narration. With OUTCAST - Second Contact, APPEAL is aiming to reboot the franchise, regarded by a large community of fans as a cult classic.

Appeal Studios at a Glance

Appeal Studios is a Belgian developer founded in 1995 that has released ten games since 1999. The studio acts solely as a developer and has not published any titles independently on PlayPile. Their catalog spans over two decades, starting with one game in the 1990s, two in the 2010s, and six in the 2020s. They focus heavily on PC development, appearing on Microsoft Windows for nine of their ten titles. They also maintain a strong presence on Xbox One with six releases, while five games each are available on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Mac. The company is best known for its work in the Shooter and Adventure genres, with five titles in each category. They have also ventured into Role-playing games four times and created two Quiz/Trivia titles. Their output includes a wide variety of other styles like Sport, Simulator, and Strategy, but these are represented by only one or two games each. The studio has a clear connection to the Outcast franchise. They released the original Outcast in 1999, which holds their highest rating at 88 out of 100. Decades later, they returned to the series with Outcast: Second Contact in 2017 and the most recent sequel, Outcast: A New Beginning, in March 2024. Quality varies significantly across their portfolio. The average rating for their six rated titles sits at 68.9 out of 100. You will find one title rated as great, three as good, and two as mixed. While the original Outcast remains a standout success, recent entries show a decline in critical reception. Gangs of Sherwood received a 57.5 score in late 2023, and their Who Wants to Be a Millionaire releases from 2020 and 2021 scored around 58. The latest sequel, Outcast: A New Beginning, achieved a 70.3 rating, which is better than the mixed scores but does not match the acclaim of the original 1999 launch. Appeal Studios continues to work on creating worlds with artificial intelligence, though their recent output suggests they have yet to consistently replicate their early success.
