Artech Studios at a Glance

Artech Studios was a Canadian developer founded in Ottawa in 1982 that operated until closing its doors in December 2011. The company released 22 games on PlayPile, with the vast majority developed in-house rather than published by them. Their catalog spans from the mid-1980s to the early 2010s, showing a clear shift in output volume over the decades. They started slowly with only two titles in the 1980s. Production increased significantly in the 1990s with seven games and peaked during the 2000s when they released ten projects. The final decade saw a decline to just three releases before the studio shut down. Their genre focus was quite broad, covering adventure and puzzle games as their most common types with six titles each. They also worked frequently in the shooter and simulator categories. Platform support was extensive for an independent developer of their size, with PC being the dominant target at 14 titles. They also supported older systems like the Commodore C64, ZX Spectrum, and Amstrad CPC alongside modern consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Their portfolio included licensed properties like Monopoly and Jeopardy!, as well as original titles such as Raze's Hell and The UnderGarden. Quality trends for Artech Studios are inconsistent. Across the seven rated titles available on PlayPile, the average score sits at 60.4 out of 100. There are no games in their catalog that achieved a great rating of 80 or higher. Four titles received good scores between 60 and 79, while three others fell into the mixed range of 40 to 59. Their best-rated work was Ace of Aces from 1986 at 69.7, but later efforts like Naval Assault: The Killing Tide and Motion Explosion! both scored 65. Some licensed projects like Littlest Pet Shop Friends did not have a rating listed, which may indicate lower engagement or data gaps. The studio's output quality did not improve over time despite their peak production years in the 2000s. Their most recent games from 2010 and 2011 received average to mixed scores, suggesting they struggled to maintain high standards as they approached closure. While they managed to work across many platforms and genres, the lack of any highly rated titles suggests their games were generally functional but rarely exceptional.
