Bemani

Japan Founded 1997

Bemani (ビーマニ, Bīmani, /biːˈmɑːni/), stylized as BEMANI, is Konami's music video game division. Originally named the Games & Music Division (G.M.D.), it changed its name in honor of its first and most successful game, Beatmania, and expanded into other music-based games, most notably rhythm games such as Dance Dance Revolution, GuitarFreaks, and DrumMania.

Bemani at a Glance

Bemani is a Japanese division of Konami that began operating under its current name in 1997. The studio has focused almost exclusively on developing games rather than publishing them, with all 11 titles listed on PlayPile credited to their development team. Their catalog spans from 1999 through 2022 and is heavily dominated by the music genre, which accounts for every single entry in their library. They also have a strong presence in arcade hardware, with eight of their games designed specifically for that platform, alongside smaller releases for PlayStation 2, original PlayStation, and Nintendo 64 systems. The company's output has slowed considerably over time. They released three titles in the 1990s, including early entries like Beatmania which inspired their name change from the Games & Music Division. Their peak productivity occurred in the 2000s with five games, featuring major series such as Dance Dance Revolution, GuitarFreaks, and DrumMania. Production dropped to two titles in the 2010s and just one game in the 2020s, which is Dance Dance Revolution A3 released in March 2022. Recent activity shows a focus on long-running rhythm series like Pop'n music. The studio released Pop'n Music Party in March 2008, followed by Pop'n Music Adventure in March 2007, Pop'n Music Sengoku Retsuden in January 2010, and Pop'n music Sunny Park in December 2012. This pattern of releasing sequels to established franchises defines their later years. While the data does not provide specific rating scores for each title, the sheer volume of arcade-focused releases suggests a niche market approach rather than mass-market console dominance. Bemani remains active but has reduced its output frequency significantly compared to their peak years in the early 2000s.
