Bits Laboratory Co. (有限会社ビッツラボラトリー) was established on December 24, 1985, by Satoru Miyazaki (宮崎暁) with fellow part-time workers from ASCII. Presumably it was originally called Workss. (The Famicom version of Ghostbusters credits "Workss"; The NES version credits "Bits." The Workss name is also present in the Famicom version of King's Knight.) Bits Laboratory had a close relationship with Game Arts for years and worked with Square a number of times during the Famicom era. In the 1990s, the company had a hit with the PlayStation dating sim True Love Story. It was also a member of Game Developers Network (GD-NET), a collective of smaller Japanese game developers. In 2017, Bits Laboratory entered into a formal business partnership with Miya Engineering, a software development company run by Toyokazu Miyazaki (宮崎豊和). Yasunori Takahara (高原保法) and Motoyuki Kanayama (金山泰志) started GameCrab in 2001, which continued development of the True Love Story series.
Bits Laboratory is a Japanese developer founded in late 1985 that produced fourteen games entirely on their own. The company remained active from 1987 through 1999 with the vast majority of its work appearing in the 1990s. Their output during the 1980s consisted of only a single title while the following decade saw thirteen releases. This period covered hardware ranging from the Family Computer and Super Famicom to the PlayStation and Turbografx-16/PC Engine CD. They also released games on the Satellaview, Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch later in their history or through re-releases. The studio focused heavily on visual novels with three titles in that category but also touched strategy, sports, shooting, role-playing, puzzle, card, quiz, fighting, and simulation genres. They maintained a close working relationship with Game Arts for many years and collaborated with Square during the Famicom era. The company was part of the Game Developers Network collective which grouped smaller Japanese developers together. In 1996 they released Monstania which currently holds an IGDB rating of 57 out of 100. This is their only rated title on PlayPile so the overall average for the studio sits at that same 57 score. Their catalog includes several entries in the True Love Story series such as the original release in 1996, its sequel in 1999, and various fan discs. While these games defined their later years, the ratings do not show a trend of high critical acclaim across their broader library. The single rated title falls into the mixed category rather than being considered great or good. After the studio stopped releasing new games in 1999, development of the True Love Story series continued by GameCrab which was founded by former members in 2001. Bits Laboratory later formed a formal partnership with Miya Engineering in 2017 but no new titles from that era appear in the current database count. The data suggests a developer that operated for over a decade with a specific niche focus but limited critical recognition based on available review scores.
