Culture Publishers

Japan Founded 1998

Culture Publishers is a Japanese media distribution company founded in January 1998 from Improre. They would be better known for the SIMPLE series of primarily casual games, these would display their MSRP on the very subtitle; e.g. "SIMPLE 2000" games would cost ¥2,000. In late 1999 Culture Convenience Club would depart from game publishing. The company would spin off into D3 Publisher.

Culture Publishers at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile looking for information on Culture Publishers, you will find a Japanese entity that operated for a very short window between 1998 and 1999. Founded in January 1998 as a spin-off from Improre, the company released exactly 14 titles during its brief existence. All of these games appear on PlayStation, and every single one launched within the 1990s before the parent company Culture Convenience Club moved on to form D3 Publisher in late 1999. The catalog is dominated by casual experiences, with Card and Board Games making up the largest category at six titles. The remaining output includes Quiz or Trivia games, Turn-based strategy projects, and single entries for Puzzle, Arcade, Adventure, Role-playing, Hack and slash/Beat 'em up, Sport, and Simulator genres. Their most recognizable brand was the SIMPLE series, which clearly displayed its price on the subtitle so consumers knew they were buying budget options like "SIMPLE 2000" games for ¥2,000. Notable releases in their final year included Simple 1500 Series Vol. 3: The Gomoku Narabe, Purumui Purumui, Simple 1500 Series: Vol.12 - The Quiz, Simple 1500 Series Vol. 13: The Race, and Billiards. Quality metrics for the company are limited by its small footprint on our database. Only one title has a rating available, which is Hello Kitty's Cube Frenzy from 1998. That game holds an IGDB score of 60 out of 100, placing it in the mixed category. This means there are no great titles with scores above 80 to point to, and the single rated entry sits right on the border between acceptable and poor performance. Since the publisher did not last beyond two years, their output does not show any evolution over decades. They simply started with a focus on low-cost casual games in 1998 and ceased publishing shortly after in 1999 before transitioning into D3 Publisher.
