J.Y. Company

Taiwan Founded 1989

J.Y. Company (Chinese: 晶太) or simply JY, was a publisher of various bootleg games, most notably Famicom games. They are best known for publishing many of Hummer Team's games. They appear to have been active from at least 1989 to possibly the mid 2000s. J.Y. Company is mostly known for publishing Famicom ports that were developed by Hummer Team and Ei-How Yang. These ports are often regarded as being higher quality than most other bootleg Famicom ports. Many of these ports are often released with an extra hack of itself, usually on the same PCB as the original game. They also made a lot of multicarts, the most common are the 4 in 1. Some had more or less games but almost all of their multis don't have repeats. As well as this, many of them include late NES/Famicom releases rarely found on other multicarts such as Rainbow Islands and Mitsume Ga Tooru. J.Y. Company hardly ever hacked other publisher's titles. From 1994 to 1998, only two titles they weren't responsible for appeared on their multicarts: Super Donkey Kong 2 and Master Fighter II. Often in their games, there's a screen containing their logo that can be accessed through a cheat code. Their logo may occasionally show up in the background of certain games as well.

J.Y. Company at a Glance

J.Y. Company was a Taiwanese publisher founded in 1989 that operated primarily during the mid-to-late 1990s. While their corporate bio suggests activity could have stretched into the mid-2000s, the data on PlayPile shows they released ten games between 1994 and 1998. Their catalog consists mostly of bootleg titles for the Family Computer, with nine entries listed on that platform and three on the Nintendo Entertainment System. They published eleven games in total, though they only developed one title themselves. Their output focused heavily on specific genres. Six of their releases fall under the Fighting category, while five are Platformers. They also released two Adventure games and a single Hack and slash or Beat 'em up title. The company is best known for publishing ports developed by Hummer Team and Ei-How Yang. These versions often included extra hacks added to the same circuit board as the original game. They produced many multicarts, most commonly featuring four games without repeats. Some of these compilations included late NES or Famicom releases like Rainbow Islands and Mitsume Ga Tooru, which rarely appeared on other collections. The quality of their work varies across their portfolio. The two rated titles on PlayPile have an average score of 82.9 out of 100. One entry rates as great with a score above 80, while the other is good but sits in the 60 to 79 range. Super Mario World (1995) holds the highest rating at 86.1, followed by Aladdin (1995) at 79.7. Other notable releases include Tekken 2 from December 1996 and Final Fight 3 from December 1998. They also published titles like The Jungle Book 2 and Mickey Mania 7 in the late 1990s. J.Y. Company rarely modified other publisher's games directly. Only two titles they did not develop appeared on their multicarts during this period. Players can often access a screen with their logo by entering a cheat code, and the logo sometimes appears in the background of certain games. Their output remained steady throughout their active years, with all ten recorded games appearing in the 1990s. This focus on Famicom ports distinguishes them from many other bootleg publishers who engaged in more extensive hacking of licensed titles.
