Locomotive Corporation at a Glance

Locomotive Corporation was a Japanese development house founded in Kyoto in May 1987 by Hiroshi Okamoto. While they operated from 1994 to 2000, their footprint on PlayPile consists of nine titles where they acted as the developer rather than the publisher. The company appears to have shifted focus over time, releasing eight games during the 1990s and only one title in the 2000s before ceasing activity. Their output was heavily concentrated on Nintendo hardware, with five games appearing on the Nintendo 64 and three on the Virtual Boy. They also released titles for the Wii U, Wii, and Nintendo Entertainment System. The company worked across a wide variety of genres including racing, adventure, strategy, role-playing, arcade, platform, fighting, sport, and puzzle. Racing games made up the largest portion of their catalog with three releases. Their rating history shows inconsistent quality rather than a strong track record. The average IGDB score for four rated titles is 59.3 out of 100. There are no great titles in their collection above 80 points. Two games fall into the good range between 60 and 79, while one title is mixed and another is poor. Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II from 1994 holds their highest score at 79.9 out of 100. AeroGauge released in 1997 earned a 67.9 rating. Penny Racers from 1998 sits at 59.5, which falls into the mixed category. Doraemon: Nobita to 3-tsu no Seireiseki received a very low score of 30 out of 100 in 1997. Later releases like Choro Q 64 2: Hacha-mecha Grand Prix Race and Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals did not receive high praise on average, with the Transformers title generally associated with lower reception in similar contexts. The company also opened offices in Vietnam and Cambodia in the mid-1990s to handle business software before Okamoto co-founded an organic cosmetics company called Apria in 2004.
