Namco Tales Studio at a Glance

If you are browsing PlayPile to understand the history of Japanese role-playing games, you will likely encounter Namco Tales Studio. This developer operated from 2003 until 2023 and was responsible for creating sixteen titles on our platform. While they never published a game independently, they developed every single title listed under their name. The company specialized almost entirely in the Role-playing genre, with fifteen of their sixteen games falling into this category. They also released three Adventure titles and one Puzzle game during their two-decade run. Their work focused heavily on PlayStation hardware. Five games launched on the PlayStation 2, while three others appeared on the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo DS. They also supported the Wii, PlayStation Portable, GameCube, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S with single releases or small batches of titles. The bulk of their output occurred in the 2000s when they released twelve games. Their activity slowed significantly in the 2010s to just three titles, and they released only one game in the 2020s before ceasing operations as an independent entity after merging into Namco Bandai Studios in 2012. Quality varies across their catalog but leans toward positive ratings. Out of eight games that have IGDB scores, two received great marks above 80, and six scored between 60 and 79. No titles fell into the mixed or poor categories. Their highest-rated game is Tales of Symphonia from 2003, which holds a score of 88.8/100. Tales of Vesperia followed with an 81.2 score in 2008. Other notable entries include Tales of the Abyss (75.4) and Tales of Xillia (77.1). Recent years showed a decline in quality for their newer releases. The 2023 remaster of Tales of Symphonia received a 61/100 score, which is much lower than the original. Tales of Graces from 2009 also sits at 67.7, while Keroro RPG and Tales of Phantasia: Cross Edition lack high scores compared to their earlier classics. The studio was acquired by Namco in 2003 after operating as Wolf Team, and they became a fully owned subsidiary by 2011 before the merger ended their existence as a separate label.
