Pioneer LDC at a Glance

Pioneer LDC operated as a Japanese publisher and developer from 1996 until 2001 before changing its name to Geneon Entertainment in 2003. The company started as the LaserDisc Corporation in 1981 but shifted focus toward anime, music, films, and games under the Pioneer brand. Their output on PlayPile is small with only eleven titles listed across both roles. Ten of these entries show them acting as a publisher while four list them as a developer. Most of their work appeared in the 1990s with ten releases compared to just one game in the 2000s. The company had a clear platform preference for Sony hardware. They released seven games on the original PlayStation and three each for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. Their catalog also includes titles for the Sega Saturn, Super Famicom, PC, Mac, and the Satellaview. Genre diversity was notable during their active years. Visual novels and simulators made up six of their eleven games. They also published adventure, strategy, tactical, point-and-click, puzzle, real-time strategy, and role-playing titles. Quality metrics for Pioneer LDC are based on a single rated title but show excellent results. Serial Experiments Lain received an average score of 91.7 out of 100 from players. This stands as their only great-rated game with no entries falling into the good, mixed, or poor categories. Their recent releases listed include You're Under Arrest in March 2001 and several titles featuring the Serial Experiments Lain franchise between late 1998 and early 1999. Noël: La Niege Special also appeared in their August 1998 lineup. The data suggests a concentrated period of activity where they released most of their content within a five-year window before ceasing operations under this name.
