Digital Chocolate Helsinki was a mobile game development studio based in Finland. Originally established as Sumea in June 2000 by founder Ilkka Paananen, the company was acquired by Digital Chocolate in June 2004 and subsequently rebranded. In 2010, Paananen departed to found Supercell Oy, which would later become one of Finland's most successful mobile game developers. Digital Chocolate Helsinki pivoted its strategy toward Facebook gaming, which delayed its transition into the rapidly growing mobile gaming sector. At its peak, the studio employed 180 people. However, strategic missteps led to significant downsizing, and by June 2013, only 25 employees remained. Digital Chocolate announced the closure of the Helsinki division shortly thereafter.
Sumea has been active in the gaming industry from 2002 to 2007, with 4 titles tracked on PlayPile. Their catalog primarily spans Platform, Sport, Adventure, with additional titles in other genres. Their games are available on Legacy Mobile Device.
