United States Founded 1995

TalonSoft, Inc. was an American video game developer and publisher based in Baltimore. TalonSoft was founded in March 1995, by video game producers Jim Rose and John Davidson. On December 24, 1998, Take-Two Interactive announced that it had acquired TalonSoft, stating that they planned to push their capabilities in the personal computer video game market. The deal comprised 1,033,336 shares accounted as a pooling-of-interest. Bengur Bryan represented TalonSoft in the purchase. By early 1999, TalonSoft's most successful game was East Front, with sales near 90,000 units. TalonSoft ceased all operations in 2002. In October 2005, Matrix Games acquired the rights to publish all games developed by TalonSoft.

TalonSoft at a Glance

TalonSoft operated as an American publisher and developer based in Baltimore from its founding in March 1995 until it ceased operations in 2002. Although the company was active for seven years, a later acquisition in 2005 allowed Matrix Games to publish its back catalog. The firm specialized almost entirely in strategy games, with 17 of its 18 listed titles falling into that category. Their library also includes seven simulators and five turn-based strategy games alongside five real-time strategy entries. They focused their efforts on personal computers, releasing 17 titles for Microsoft Windows and two for DOS. The company's output spanned from the late 1990s into the mid-2000s. They released 11 games during the 1990s and seven more in the 2000s. This period included major releases like Gary Grigsby's Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich in December 2009, though this title appeared after the original company had shut down. Other notable releases from their active years include John Tiller's Campaign Series in December 2007 and Age of Sail II: Privateer's Bounty in August 2002. Rising Sun arrived in December 2000, followed by a sequel to Age of Sail in January 2001. Take-Two Interactive acquired TalonSoft on December 24, 1998, aiming to expand their presence in the PC market. At that time, East Front was their most successful game with sales near 90,000 units. The company stopped all operations by early 2002. Despite a long history in the genre, their reception on modern databases is mixed. Out of two rated titles, one received a great score of 80.6 for Lemmings Revolution, while Rising Sun scored poorly at 40. The average rating across these two games sits at 60.3. This suggests that while they produced some well-regarded strategy content, their overall legacy includes significant inconsistency in quality based on current data. Their catalog remains small with only 18 titles total between publishing and development roles.
