Team Ninja operates as a Japanese developer founded in 1995 within Tecmo. The studio began as Tecmo Creative #3 before becoming an independent entity in 1999. Their early work focused on fighting games to compete with Sega, resulting in the Dead or Alive series. Today they maintain a catalog of 52 titles where they act solely as developers. Their output spans from the late 1990s through 2026, showing a clear increase in productivity over time. They released only two games in the 1990s but produced 20 titles during the 2010s. Recent years show continued activity with 14 releases so far in the 2020s. The studio focuses heavily on action gameplay. Adventure and hack and slash genres dominate their library with 26 and 22 games respectively. Fighting games also make up a significant portion of their work with 16 titles. They have explored role-playing games and strategy, though those entries are fewer in number. Their reach covers major modern consoles like PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. They have also maintained a presence on legacy hardware including the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Quality varies across their portfolio but leans toward the positive side. The average rating stands at 74.4 out of 100 based on 33 rated games. Eleven titles achieved great status with scores above 80, while eighteen received good ratings between 60 and 79. There are three mixed entries and a single poor-rated game in their history. The Ninja Gaiden Black reboot from 2005 holds the highest score at 90.8, followed by the original Ninja Gaiden entry at 87.4. More recent releases like Nioh 3 also perform well with an 84.2 rating. However, some newer projects show a dip in reception. Rise of the Ronin from 2024 scored 75, and Ninja Gaiden II Black from January 2025 received only 72.6. Venus Vacation Prism appeared in March 2025 but lacks a listed score. The studio has occasionally worked on titles outside their main franchises. They contributed to Metroid: Other M and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 alongside Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. While they are best known for Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive, their catalog includes simulator and sport games in small quantities. Their consistent output over nearly three decades shows a steady presence in the industry without significant gaps in development.
