Crimson Desert is an open-world action-adventure game set in the beautiful yet brutal continent of Pywel. Embark on a journey as the Greymane Kliff…

Crimson Desert is a single-player open-world action-adventure game from Pearl Abyss, the studio behind Black Desert Online. Originally planned as a prequel to that MMO, Crimson Desert evolved into a standalone experience with its own identity. Think The Witcher 3 meets Dragons Dogma, with the combat fluidity Pearl Abyss is known for cranked up to eleven.

You play as Kliff, leader of the Greymanes, a mercenary group that operates across the continent of Pywel. After a brutal ambush by the rival Black Bears faction leaves your crew dead or scattered, you set out to reunite the survivors, rebuild your family, and uncover a threat that could consume the entire continent.

The World of Pywel

Pywel is divided into five distinct regions, each with its own climate, culture, and challenges. From vast wilderness and bustling cities to ancient ruins and the mysterious sky realm known as the Abyss, the world is designed to reward exploration and curiosity.

Recent previews have compared the pacing to Red Dead Redemption 2. At ground level, there is a surprising focus on navigating densely populated areas with care. You can interact with nearly every citizen, greet them, rob them if you have a mask, play rock-paper-scissors with local ruffians, or help a man clean his chimney. The world feels lived-in.

But do not let the laid-back moments fool you. Pywel is dangerous. Enemy soldiers, sorcerers, beasts, and machines roam the land. Faction wars simmer constantly. And the Abyss, a floating realm of ancient ruins and magical power, holds secrets that will reshape everything Kliff thinks he knows.

Combat and Progression

Combat in Crimson Desert is visceral and fast. Pearl Abyss built the game on their proprietary BlackSpace Engine, combining melee sequences, combo attacks, and strategic gameplay into something that looks like a playable action movie.

Kliff starts with a modest skill set, but trips to the Abyss grant him supernatural powers. These include force-style abilities to manipulate objects, a force jump to propel yourself into the air, and eventually a glider for traversal. Abyss catalysts serve as skill points to upgrade stats and unlock new abilities, from improved jumping to advanced sword strikes and even a suplex.

The game also features swappable party members. While Kliff remains the central protagonist, you can play as tanky berserker Oongka or the nimble fighter Damaine for different combat styles. It adds variety and keeps encounters fresh across the massive runtime.

The Greymane Faction System

Beyond personal combat, you will rebuild the Greymanes as an organization. This is a full faction management system where you recruit crew members, send them on missions, and gather resources. As you explore Pywel and complete quests, your faction grows stronger, opening up new opportunities and story branches.

Your core companions include Oongka, Yann, and Naira, each with their own combat styles and personalities. The dynamic between these characters drives much of the emotional core of the story.

Voice Cast

Pearl Abyss brought in serious talent for Crimson Desert. Alec Newman from Cyberpunk 2077 and Dune voices Kliff, bringing gravelly gravitas to the world-weary mercenary captain. The full voice cast has not been completely revealed, but what we have heard suggests a cinematic quality that matches the games ambitions.

Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

Crimson Desert launches in multiple editions:

  • Standard Edition at $59.99 includes the base game
  • Deluxe Edition includes bonus cosmetics and digital extras
  • Collectors Edition at $280 comes with physical goods including a statue and art book

Pre-ordering on any platform gets you the Khaled Shield. PlayStation pre-orders also include the exclusive Grotevant armor set.

PC System Requirements

Good news for mid-range PC owners. Crimson Deserts requirements are more reasonable than expected:

Minimum:

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i5-8500
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060
  • Storage: 135 GB SSD
  • DirectX 12

Recommended:

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 2080 or AMD equivalent
  • CPU: Intel i7-13700K or AMD Ryzen 7 7700X

The game also supports NVIDIA GeForce NOW for cloud gaming.

Release Details

Crimson Desert launches globally on March 19, 2026 at 11:00 PM CET. The game releases simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Epic, and Mac.

Review embargoes lift shortly before launch, so expect coverage to flood in just before you can play.

Should You Be Hyped?

After years of impressive trailers and understandable skepticism, recent hands-on previews are remarkably positive. IGN called it delightfully violent nonsense with genuine promise. The PlayStation Blog described four hours barely scratching the surface. Critics are noting the attention to detail, the varied quest design, and the satisfying combat loop.

The comparisons to Breath of the Wild, The Witcher 3, and Red Dead Redemption 2 are lofty. But Pearl Abyss appears to have spent the extra development time making those comparisons feel earned rather than aspirational.

March 19 cannot come soon enough.
