The third entry in Capcom's turn-based Monster Hunter spinoff arrives on March 13, and Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection looks like the most ambitious one yet. If you bounced off the hunting action games but always thought the monsters deserved more screen time, this is your entry point.

While mainline Monster Hunter games are action-focused hunting experiences, the Stories series takes a different approach. Combat is turn-based. You befriend monsters instead of only killing them. Think Pokemon meets Monster Hunter, complete with egg collecting, monster companions called Monsties, and rock-paper-scissors combat mechanics layered with deeper tactical options.
Twisted Reflection continues this formula while expanding on everything that worked in Wings of Ruin.
The Story
Two centuries after a conflict divided neighboring kingdoms, twin Rathalos hatch from a single egg. This is considered an omen of destruction. The drums of war start again. Your character gets caught in the middle, navigating politics while trying to prevent catastrophe.
Capcom has mentioned a more mature protagonist this time around. The tone appears slightly darker than previous entries, though the colorful monster designs and charm remain intact.
New Features
Dual-Element Monsters: Some monsters now wield two elements simultaneously. This adds complexity to the combat system and creates new strategic considerations when building your team.
Habitat Restoration: A new mechanic letting you restore and manage monster habitats. Details are still emerging, but it sounds like base-building meets conservation. The Stories series always had heart. This fits.
Expanded Egg Hunting: The core loop of finding eggs and hatching new Monsties returns with more variety and depth. Egg hunting was oddly satisfying in previous games. More options are welcome.
Advanced Battle Tactics: Capcom's developer walkthrough highlighted deeper combat options beyond the basic rock-paper-scissors foundation. Veterans of the series should find more to master.
Platforms and Editions
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection launches March 13, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam.
The Deluxe Edition includes layered armor sets for your companions, monster hair customization options, and outfits for your Palico companion Rudy. A separate side story featuring Rudy is planned for Autumn 2026.
Pre-order bonuses include the Skyscale Queen layered armor for companion Eleanor.
Should You Care?
If you enjoyed Wings of Ruin, this is an easy yes. The formula worked and Capcom is building on it rather than reinventing it.
If you are new to the series, Twisted Reflection appears to be a reasonable entry point. The turn-based combat is more accessible than mainline Monster Hunter, and the monster collection loop is immediately satisfying.
If you only care about action Monster Hunter, this probably is not for you. The Stories series has always been its own thing. That is the appeal.
One week until launch. March 13 is going to be busy.
