Pokémon Champions Launches April 8: Everything You Need to Know

The Pokémon Company is trying something different. Pokémon Champions arrives on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026, and it represents a focused approach to competitive battling that the series has never quite delivered in standalone form. Think Pokémon Stadium for the modern era, except with cross-platform play, Pokémon HOME integration, and every major battle gimmick from the past decade.

What Is Pokémon Champions?

Developed by The Pokémon Works, a new studio formed as a joint venture between The Pokémon Company and ILCA, Pokémon Champions strips away the adventure elements of mainline games to focus entirely on battles. Types, Abilities, and moves all work as expected. The difference is the scope. Every major battle mechanic from recent generations appears here: Mega Evolution, Z-moves, Gigantamax, Dynamax, and Terastallization all coexist through something called the Omni ring.

That means competitive players finally get a single game where they can experiment with strategies that span multiple generations of mechanics. Want to build a team around Mega Evolution while your opponent relies on Terastallization? That becomes possible here.

New Mega Evolutions Debut

Three new Mega Evolutions originally introduced in Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be playable in Champions. Each brings a unique twist:

  • Mega Meganium gains the new Ability Mega Sol, which makes all its moves function as if harsh sunlight were active, regardless of actual weather conditions.
  • Mega Emboar receives Mold Breaker, letting its attacks bypass defensive Abilities entirely.
  • Mega Feraligatr introduces Dragonize, converting its Normal-type moves to Dragon-type while boosting their power by 20%.

These new Abilities hint at how The Pokémon Works plans to shake up competitive play by giving starters powerful new tools that change fundamental battle assumptions.

Pokémon HOME Integration

Pokémon Champions connects to Pokémon HOME, meaning you can bring Pokémon from past games including Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Arceus, Sword and Shield, and even Pokémon GO. The roster will not be limited to whatever ships on the cartridge. If your favorite competitive partner lives in HOME, they can likely make the jump.

Cross-Platform Play Is Coming

The mobile version of Pokémon Champions launches later in 2026 on iOS and Android. When it does, Switch and mobile players will be able to battle each other cross-platform. This could significantly expand the competitive player pool and make finding matches faster at all skill levels.

Official VGC Support

Here is the detail that matters most for competitive players: Pokémon Champions becomes the official game for Video Game Championships events starting in May 2026. The Malaysia Master Ball League on May 9-10 and the Indianapolis Regional Championships on May 29-31 will both run on Champions instead of the latest mainline game.

This is a significant shift. VGC has traditionally used the newest mainline entry, which meant competitive players had to adapt to whatever mechanics that generation introduced. Champions consolidates everything, creating a consistent competitive environment that does not reset with each new generation.

Switch 2 Gets a Free Upgrade

If you own a Switch 2, a free update will let you play Pokémon Champions with improved graphics. The game launches cross-generation, so you can start on original Switch hardware and upgrade whenever you want.

What You Get at Launch

Two purchase options are available:

  • Standard Edition: The base game with access to Ranked and Casual Battles.
  • Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack: Includes bonus Pokémon storage space, an extra battle song, and additional in-game benefits.

Should You Care?

If competitive Pokémon battling interests you, Champions looks like the most significant release in years. The consolidation of battle mechanics, official VGC support, cross-platform play, and HOME integration all point toward a game designed to be the definitive competitive platform.

If you prefer the adventure and exploration side of Pokémon, this probably is not for you. Champions exists for people who want to battle, build teams, and climb rankings without catching 400 monsters first.

Pokémon Champions launches April 8, 2026 on Nintendo Switch. Mobile versions follow later this year.
