The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Preview - Beta Starts April 22, Spring 2027 Release

Owlcat Games just revealed when you can finally step into The Expanse universe. The third-person action RPG launches Spring 2027 with day one Game Pass access, and a closed beta opens April 22 for those who purchase the Miller's Pack or Collector's Edition.

For fans of the books and show, this is the Expanse game that actually feels like The Expanse. Owlcat (Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous) is building something that takes the political tension, hard science fiction, and morally gray decisions of the source material seriously.

What You Are Playing

You and your twin sibling J work as Pinkwater Security mercenaries. A routine shore leave on Eros turns into a nightmare when you witness a massacre of thousands. You escape by hijacking an experimental enemy ship, making yourself a target for vengeance across the entire solar system.

The setup echoes the best of The Expanse. You are not a chosen one or a hero. You are someone caught in something much bigger, forced to adapt and build a crew to survive.

Your Crew Matters

Companions are not just combat assets. Zafar, your mechanic friend (voiced by Kerem Erdinc), provides fire support even when not in your active squad. Regina brings networking skills and marksmanship (voiced by Nola Klop). Teo serves as your ship medic. Michael (Will de Renzy-Martin) is a fellow mercenary with combat experience. And J, your twin, always has your back.

The ship itself, the Gemini, becomes your home. Relationships develop based on your decisions and leadership style. Trust is earned.

Combat With Consequences

Third-person cover shooting forms the core. Shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and SMGs all play differently. Cover can be destroyed, enemies use grenades, and staying mobile matters.

Gadgets add tactical options: zero-g grenades for space combat, tactical scanners to reveal hidden enemies, drone swarms to harry opponents. An Exploit system lets companions eliminate entire enemy groups when you position them correctly.

And choices have consequences. Owlcat promises decisions that affect lives, sometimes people you barely know, sometimes people you care about. The universe does not tell you if you did right or wrong.

Where You Will Go

Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, Luna. Ruined habitats and political strongholds. The system looks different from every vantage point. Some places are visibly falling apart. Others just hide it better.

How to Get the Beta

The closed beta starts April 22, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S. Access requires purchasing the Miller's Pack or Collector's Edition from Owlcat's official site. The beta runs until release, so there is no rush if you want to wait and see more first.

The beta includes a full mission: returning to Pinkwater 4 station aboard your stolen ship, meeting Zafar, and facing the first of many difficult choices.
